The coaching seed was planted. Coach Ralph had never considered himself to be a marathoner. The distance was well out his comfort zone. Having missed qualifying for Boston by just over 3 minutes in his first marathon, a fire was lit. He may be able to do this. Determined to qualify, he reviewed his race performance and training plan to assess what to do differently to improve his chances for BQ success the next time. He realized that even though the course appeared to be relatively flat, there were plenty of stretches with rolling hills. Once a week he added a hill circuit to his training program. To stay strong towards the end of the race, he incorporated progression runs. A year later at Marine Corp Marathon, he qualified for Boston and improved his time by 13 minutes to finish in 3:01.
